"Preserving
Indentation in HTML"
Author: Mark Fredericks, PROSOFT
In HTML pages, multiple spaces are displayed
as a single space. Using spaces to indent hierarchies is often required. SQL
CONNECT BY queries use space indentation to show levels of recursive
relations between records. To preserve the correct indentation in HTML,
spaces can be replaced with the non-breaking space tag . The functions below
can be used in producing query results that will display correctly when
viewed by a browser.

costs & "suffering".

Notes
Happy Birthday! The Pipelines are 3 years
old this month. The original idea was to create a "noise-free"
environment for Oracle professionals to discuss technical ideas, share
code and contribute papers and tips (similar to the old Compuserve ORAUSER
forum). Since it's birth, the Pipelines have grown to 16,000 users, and
welcomes about a dozen new members each day. Over 100 messages are posted
daily on the DBA and PL/SQL Pipelines, making them among the most active
Oracle discussion sites on the web, aside from Usenet.
Congratulations, Comrade Hurley! Darryl Hurley's March/April
Pipeline articles, entitled "Oracle's Log Miner" have been re-published in the Russian Edition of Oracle Magazine! Here's the

Physical disk I/O is by far the slowest of the three
core components found in all computing devices (CPU, memory, and disk). For that
reason, minimizing the volume of disk I/O and spreading disk I/O out over
multiple physical devices are key elements in the system performance tuning
process. Savant’s Diagnostic Center for Oracle includes a Data
File I/O List. This list display is effective at isolating datafiles and
tablespaces experiencing the most I/O and determining if there are opportunities
to spread the load out more evenly. Click

The establishment and enforcing of naming
conventions is often one of the first duties to be tackled when implementing
new software. Adequate thought and preparation is required in order for such
a task to be successful. What amount of effort should be extended in the
creation of appropriate database naming standards? Are current industry
standards acceptable? Shakespeare, many, many years ago, may have said it
best when he wrote:
"What's in a name? That
which we call a rose
by any other name would smell as sweet."
But, if that is true, then why do those of us
in the DP industry spend so much time and effort developing and enforcing
naming standards? Maybe what something is called is not quite so trivial a
matter after all! Click
